Young Actors Company

The Young Actors company, based in Huyton, Merseyside, takes young people from three youth theatres who want to pursue acting as a career. It is run by Community Interest Company Altru Arts, who received a grant of £960 from CHCP Foundation to run teaching and rehearsal sessions. Abby finds the group very empowering. “It’s thrown us into an environment that gives us experience of what the industry’s like. We tackle mature themes and it allows us to explore harder topics and show what’s relevant and important to us. We get to experiment with themes and issues and we all have an input; we don’t just act, we stage manage, dance and organise props and lighting.”

Rebecca says, “I don’t know what I’d do without this group. The support I’ve received is incomparable. I haven’t self-harmed in a year and that’s due to this group.” Craig is doing a Masters in Drama Therapy, focussing on LGBT groups and how drama can help them as it’s helped him. “We’re so grateful for the money,” says Abby, “because it’s allowed us to carry on. We love it; I wouldn’t have the confidence to communicate the way I can without this group. It builds leadership and transferable skills – I’m a teaching assistant at a school and what I’ve learned here really helps me.

“It’s very different from youth theatre and it can be really hard. The sessions push us to get the best out of ourselves, to build together and develop with each other.”
