Local Works Ltd

Local Works is a ‘not for profit’ social enterprise based in the East of the City of Hull providing alternative education for young people aged 11 to 16. It’s an approved supplier to the local authority to provide alternative education, whilst also working with a number of special schools in Hull. They received a small grant from CHCP CIC for £185 to buy footballs and boxing gloves.

Most of the young people who attend Local Works have been excluded from mainstream education and many of them are in the care system. Director Wayne Anderson explains that schools use Local Works as a way of building young people’s confidence. ‘Schools send students here, some for one or two sessions a week and some full time. They may go back into mainstream education or stay for a term or two.

‘All the young people here work towards a sports and fitness qualification and they also do English and maths, healthy eating and cooking. We do sports with them every afternoon, from football, boxing and dodgeball to working out in the gym, dance, circuit training and spinning. It can be a struggle to get them motivated but we’ve been very successful in bringing young people back into some form of education and engaging them in learning.’

Lewis has spent the last 18 months at Local Works; before that, he hadn’t been to school for a year and was completely disengaged from education, but now his attendance is at 98% and he’s much happier and is thinking about doing a foundation course with a training provider when he moves on. Before he went to Local Works, his main aspiration was to go to prison; now he’s thinking about a job and a future.
