Hornsea Scout Group

Hornsea Scout Group serves the young people of Hornsea and surrounding villages, offering a wide range of activities. At the moment they have around 90 young people involved ranging from 6 – 18 years of age.

The grant provided was used to fund the purchase of a Canadian canoe that has enabled the group to extend its activities water based activities. A Canadian canoe is an open boat which can hold more than one person. This has been particularly useful for one of their members with cerebral palsy, who was previously unable to get involved in water based activities as only small enclosed kayaks were available.

Since the group acquired the canoe they have committed to an extensive programme of water activities and have recently got some young coaches from Hull University Canoe Club involved.
Explaining some of the impacts on health and wellbeing, Robert Carlisle, Group Scout Leader said, “Not everyone is willing or able to play football or rugby, but when you’ve spent five hours canoeing into the wind it’s better than any other sport!”

“Getting the Canadian canoe has enabled us to deliver canoeing to so many more young people. To see the way our young people have developed this last spring and summer makes all the time we have put in worthwhile.”
